Criteria for Irregular Piece Surcharge

The piece:

  • Is not fully enclosed in an outer shipping container
  • Is packaged in materials other than corrugated cardboard, such as metal, wood, leather, hard or soft plastic, or expanded polystyrene foam
  • Is wrapped in shrink wrap or stretch wrap
  • Has a round or cylindrical shape, such as buckets, cans, drums, tires, or barrels
  • Includes wheels, handles, or straps
  • Has the potential to become entangled with or cause damage to other packages or meterial handling systems

If no queries are raised after delivery, the surcharges will be considered accepted and payable.

Surcharge Definition:An ‘Irregular Piece’ is an item that: has dimensions not exceeding 120 x 80 x 80 cm (L x W x H) and a weight not exceeding 30 kg; and is unusually shaped, unstable, or packaged in outer packaging that has the potential to become entangled in or cause damage to other packages or the material handling system (MHS).

Examples of an Irregular Piece — wooden crate, hard plastic, metal, polystyrene, case / bag handles, loosely strapped, item with wheels, drum / canister, cylinder / round, excessive plastic wrap, tires

Category: Non-Corrugated Outer Shipping Containers

  • Packages that are in an outer shipping container made of materials other than corrugated cardboard, such as metal, wood, canvas, paper, leather, hard plastic, soft plastic (like plastic bags), or expanded polystyrene foam (like Styrofoam).

Category: Excessive Plastic Wrap

  • Outer shipping containers that are covered in shrink wrap or stretch wrap.

Category: Rolling / Wheeled and Entanglement Risk Packages

  • Packages that are secured with metal, plastic, or cloth bands, or have wheels (like a bicycle), handles, or straps. This includes packages that are loosely wrapped or have contents sticking out, as well as those that could get tangled with or damage other packages or the material handling system (MHS).

Category: Round or Cylindrical Packages

  • Round or cylindrical packages include items like mailing tubes, cans, buckets, barrels, tires, drums, and pails.

These risks impact both equipment integrity and shipment quality, making special handling necessary.
